Volunteers at Shore Medical Center are essential to our mission, joining our healthcare team in “Caring Together” for our patients. Whether offering a smile, listening ear, or helping hand, our volunteers make a meaningful impact every day—and they leave feeling fulfilled, knowing they’ve made a difference. Pat Haughey and Kathleen Haggerty, two of our dedicated fall prevention volunteers, are shining examples of how rewarding it can be to volunteer at Shore.

Pat and Kathleen joined Shore’s new volunteer fall prevention program in May, and every Tuesday morning, they visit patients at high risk for falls, reminding them to call for assistance before getting out of bed.

“As adults, it can be hard to ask for help, especially for something like going to the bathroom,” says Kathleen. “We share fall prevention tips, and then Pat will ask, ‘So, what brings you here?’ Patients love to talk about their experiences, and by sharing our own stories, we remind them that falls can happen to anyone. By the time we leave, they seem more at ease, uplifted and aware of the importance of being careful.”

For Pat, the joy of volunteering comes from connecting with people. “As a former newspaper owner, I’ve always had a genuine interest in people’s stories. Talking with patients helps take their minds off their challenges, even for a moment, and I enjoy learning about their lives.”

Both Pat and Kathleen sought a Shore volunteer opportunity after personal experiences led them to seek more fulfillment. After experiencing a fall and hospital stay herself while traveling, Kathleen wanted to help others feel less alone in the hospital. Pat, after caring for her late husband, sought a meaningful way to give back while staying busy.

Shore’s Volunteer Director, Lisa DiTroia, ensures every volunteer finds a role they enjoy. When Pat expressed interest in a new role after being in another position for a few months, Lisa introduced her to the fall prevention program, and it’s been the perfect fit.

What makes volunteering at Shore so special is the flexibility. Pat and Kathleen appreciate that they can plan their other commitments around their volunteer hours.

If you’re looking to give back and become part of a community that truly makes an impact, we’d love for you to join our team of volunteers. Whether it’s spending time with patients, greeting visitors, or assisting in the gift shop, there’s a role for everyone.
